Registered Clinical Counsellors in BC are not permitted to diagnose autism in BC, but can conduct screening assessments to help parents in making the decision to pursue an Autism Assessment or other Psych-Ed evaluations. Prior to the session, parents will be provided with screening questionnaires to complete. During our 45-minute parent intake session, we will review the completed screening forms, and parents will share relevant history, background information and any current areas of concern. Please share any IEP or diagnostic reports prior to this session and complete your child's intake form, including current medication(s).
During our observation session, we will observe play between parent and child in the playroom. While an in-person session is preferred for the observation session, virtual observations are possible when in-person sessions are a significant barrier for the client.
Following the observation session, a report will be provided to the parents, summarizing the results from the screening assessments and observations made during the in-person session. The report will include recommendations regarding seeking further diagnosis.
Some families may wish to have a follow up session to discuss the report as well as to understand next steps, if they decide to pursue a formal diagnosis. This session can be held in-person or via zoom, and we can help families create a plan of next-steps, including providing resources and referrals.
